Building Integrated Timing System

The building integrated timing system (BITS) is a method for distributing a precision clock among telecommunications equipment. It provides clock reference to different network elements in the central office, accepts a reference input, and performs clock-noise filtering to remove jitter and wander. It also offers HOLDOVER in case of reference failure. BITS is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of PSTN equipment, where precise timing is required.

BITS systems are designed to meet the synchronization requirements of various communication networks. They support multiple Stratum levels, including Stratum 1, 2, 3, and 4, with each level offering different levels of accuracy and stability. The hierarchy of timing sources ensures redundancy and reliability in the event of connection failures to higher-level clocks. BITS systems are widely used in Class 5 switches in central offices and customer premises equipment.
